| Organic Growing Tips |
Frequent watering is necessary as the soil will tend to dry out easily in the hot sun and/or wind. Watering every other day is likely required and watering every day in some environments may be essential.
We recommend planting with a well-drained soil mix combined with compost or manure to add organic matter which is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which will help the growing plants.
To add additional organic fertilizer throughout the growing season you can consult your local garden center for recommendations or you can take compost and add water to it, which creates a compost "tea" that can be added during watering. You can also add dry compost and work it in to the soil next to the plants.
To promote continued fruit/vegetable formation, be sure to keep mature crops harvested.
From year to year, keep track of your soil mix, organic fertilizing, and watering techniques noting growing results. Over time, you will be able to develop a plan customized to your region that produces bigger harvests and better tasting crops.
In organic growing you can utilize the practice of "Companion Planting" instead of insecticides where certain flowers, plants or herbs are used to repel pests, or as a decoy for pests. For instance, planting Marigolds next to tomato or bean plants have been said to help to repel Mexican Bean Beetles and Rosemary is said to repel cabbage pests.
With organic growing, it is best to be patient as the natural ways of fertilizing, and pest control are a bit slower than chemical procedures, but in the long run it will end up saving you money and piece of mind. |
